Whenever someone talked about God speaking to them, initially I thought about some loud thunderous voice that was undeniably God. The more I walked with God, recognizing His voice has not always been that apparent and easy. What I’ve come to learn is that God is a Spirit. It should not be a surprise that He communicates to us Spirit to spirit and not in our physical senses. I wish I knew this earlier. So many times after prayer, I would look for an outward sound. Since I didn’t hear a sound or voice, I figured God was not speaking. Now-a-days, one of the most frequent ways that God has been communicating with me is through “The Knowing”.
The Knowing is that feeling deep down on the inside of you. Somehow and someway, you just know that you should take a particular route or complete a task. It is more often than not followed by a peace about a decision, even if logically that decision does not make sense. The knowing happens in so many area’s of our lives and I want you to become more in tune and aware, so that you can recognize how God speaks to your spirit.
Let’s take it all the way back to the great great great grand daddy of humanity. Adam! Adam was a lone soldier. He named the animals, tended to the garden, and fellowshipped with God. Still, God felt like Adam needed a companion and helper. In that God created Eve.
22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said,“This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’
for she was taken out of man.”That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.
– Genesis 2:22-24
In this scripture, nowhere did it say that God introduced Eve to Adam as his wife. Yet somehow and someway, Adam knew that this was His wife. Similarly, I truly believe that in relationships and friendships, as you are prayerful, you will know who fits your life.
In Difficult Situations
David also had an experience with the knowing. We all know the story of David & Goliath. David was the shepherd boy turned king that killed the giant. During this era, the primary weapon of war was a sword. Despite the sword being the most common method, David knew that in order to kill Goliath, he could not get close to Goliath. The weapon of David’s choice was a sling and a few stones. As unconventional as that was, it got the job done. God spoke to David’s spirit and downloaded a strategy to David.
Have you ever had a challenge that you did not know how to solve, but somehow the solution came to you? My friend, this was not just a light bulb that went off. This was God speaking to your spirit. Quite possibly, you have been shrugging off the voice of God through this knowing because it has been happening so subtly. If you have never experienced this, try practicing it in your day to day. Many times, while at work, if I encounter a problem that I cannot solve, I would quietly pray and ask the Lord for a strategy or solution. More often than not, in a few moments, I would just know what to do.
The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.
When it was time to write “I’m 25, Now What?”, initially the Lord did not speak to me audibly. I just knew that it was time to write. It was the same kind of knowing I felt when it was time to start this blog. God delights in directing His children. As you continue to seek Him, He will place desires in your heart that will guide you along the path that He desires for you to go.
Can I free myself real quick? When God is testing your faith, the circumstances does not make sense and I don’t always like it . It did not make sense for me to write a book or start a blog. I had recently graduated from college with a degree in business. I thought it would make more sense for me to start a business of my own. But looking back, I can see how God’s direction and path is so much better suited for my life. Once again, Jesus wins. Woohoo!
Now that you know that God has indeed been speaking to you all along, I want to forewarn you that the knowing is not enough. In order to see results, it’s so important to actually walk out in faith on this knowing that God has placed inside your spirit. If you know that you should start that business, jump. If you know that you need to go to a different country, jump. If you know that you should be going to college, jump.
Get busy seeking the Lord, being sensitive to His voice, and in one way or another, The Knowing will come.
Be strong, Be Courageous, Serve God wholeheartedly,
