The voice of God has a distinct sound.  At least that is what I thought. I would often hear persons around me say, “God told me this or God told me that”.

Initially, I wondered, “How does God speak?” I thought it meant they heard some loud, robust voice that was undeniably God. You know, just like the movies.

Experience has taught me differently.  Recognizing God’s voice is not always that apparent or straightforward.

In fact, the voice of God can sound like the complete opposite of loud. God is a Spirit; therefore, He speaks to our spirit, rather than to our physical senses.

This is a revelation I wish I understood sooner.  Many times in prayer, I sat patiently waiting for an audible voice to speak.  Well! It never happened.

There are many ways God speaks to our spirit. I outlined them in my free e-book, “God Still Speaks. We will start with one way that is often overlooked.

The Knowing

The Knowing is a feeling deep on the inside of you. It is sometimes referred to as a gut feeling or intuition. This is brought on by God’s Spirit, revealing information to you.

Somehow and some way, you just know something you did not know before.

  • You knew something was off about a situation.
  • You knew you were supposed to check in on a friend.
  • You knew you should not have gone to a particular place.

There are several common areas in our lives where we can experience the knowing. The more you are aware of this, the more you will be sensitized the next time you experience the knowing.

In Relationships

Let’s take it all the way back to the great great great granddaddy of humanity. Adam! Adam was a lone soldier.

He named the animals, tended to the garden, and fellowshipped with God. Still, God felt like Adam needed a companion and helper. In that, God created Eve.

Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.

– Genesis 2:22-24 (NIV)

In this scripture, nowhere did it say that God introduced Eve to Adam as his wife. Yet somehow and someway, Adam knew that this was His wife.

Similarly, I truly believe that in relationships and friendships, as you are prayerful, you will know who fits your life

God’s spirit will give you the ability to discern and know beyond what we can see physically and tangibly.

In Difficult Situations

David also had an experience with the knowing. We all know the story of David & Goliath. David was the shepherd boy turned king that killed the giant.

During this era, the primary weapon of war was a sword. Despite the sword being the most common method, David knew that to kill Goliath, he could not get close to Goliath.

The weapon of David’s choice was a sling and a few stones. As unconventional as that was, it got the job done. God spoke to David’s spirit and downloaded a strategy to David. In other words, David knew what to do.

Have you ever had a challenge that you did not know how to solve, but somehow the solution came to you? Quite possibly, it came to you during a time you were not even thinking about it.

More than likely, this was not just a light bulb that went off. Instead, it was God speaking to your spirit. Perhaps, you have been shrugging off the voice of God simply because it happens so subtly.

There are often solutions wrapped up in God’s subtle nudges.

In Decisions

The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.

-Proverbs 37:23(NLT)

A few years ago, I authored the book, “I’m 25, Now What?”. Initially, the Lord did not speak to me audibly; however, I just knew that it was time to write a book.

It was the same kind of knowing I felt when it was time to start this blog. God was speaking to my spirit.

God delights in directing His children.  God has authored a plan for the lives of every person on earth.  In order for this plan to be complete, God has to direct us in accordance with the blueprint for our lives.

This partnership with God in completing His plan for us on earth can only be done through communication and our obedience one decision at a time.

The knowing often gives us direction in our decision making.  Simply put, God will not leave us hanging.

Learning to recognize God speaking to our Spirits takes faith, discipline, and practice. As you seek God in prayer, have faith that He will speak back to you.

Even on days when you did not feel like you heard His voice, keep praying. Protect your faith.  This is where you will need discipline and practice.

The more time you spend communicating with God, the more sensitive you will become to His voice, including when He speaks to you through the knowing.

As always,

Be strong, Be Courageous, Serve God wholeheartedly,
