If I could give this era a name, I would call it the “purpose era”.  It seems that everyone is talking about purpose in some way shape or form.  I’m actually glad that there is an awareness building and people are realizing that they are on earth for a reason.  But just like everything that God creates, the job of the enemy is to attempt to pervert it. Quite honestly, I’ve seen in more times than I would like to admit.  Now don’t get spooked out when I say this, but the goal of the devil, your adversary is to do everything in his power to destroy the plan that God has for your life. Yet, through Jesus Christ, staying Alert, and remaining sensitive to God, we will always have the victory.

Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.
-1 Peter 5:8

Here are three areas to consistently guard on your journey to walking out God’s purpose for your life:

Identity

If the enemy can get you to pursue the idea of purpose before you have a solid understanding of who you are, then he has the upper hand.  Before I was saved and knew that I was a child of God, I thought of becoming a writer.  I’m sure if I had birthed those books during that season of my life, it would have looked totally different from what I’m 25, Now What? looks like today.  I would have been writing from a place that was not who or what God created me to be. Of course it would not have reflected God.  Similarly, when I think of purpose being perverted because of premature pursuit, I think of Moses.  Moses killed an Egytian man that was beating an Israelite.  Moses’ purpose was to lead and protect the Israelites.  The problem was Moses had not yet encountered God and knew who He was.  Ultimately he acted in an effort to execute his purpose, but it was contaminated and Moses suffered the consequences. Having a solid foundation and understanding of your identity and who you are in Jesus Christ should always proceed purpose.

Motives

Another tactic often used by the enemy is to pervert your motives.  There are so many persons that are pursuing what they believe God has called them to do, but with the wrong motives.  Some do it for fame, others power, money, or pride.  In the end, God desires the purity of our hearts above our actions because what is on the inside will inevitably spew out.  If you are pursuing purpose with the wrong motives, it will be exposed eventually.  God wants to protect you from that type of pain.  Check your heart.  Why do you want Gods purpose in your life?  Is it to genuinely serve Gods people? Do you just want to please the Father?  If you said yes to both of these, you are in a good place.

God’s Plan

Just as God has a plan for your life, the enemy also has a plan for your life. The trick comes in because he will always try to make his plan look eerily similar to God.  If you do not have a spirit of discernment, you may end up taking the bait.  For some, God’s plan is for you to be a successful business person; however there are some character traits that He wants to develop in you before He releases the businesses.  Now since you already know that business is Gods desire for your life, an investor comes in with a business opportunity that you seemingly cannot refute.  If you are not able to discern the timing of God and His heart concerning this situation, you may take a business opportunity that God did not intend for you.  This opportunity may even be successful for a while; however that was not God’s plan.   No one is perfect, but everyone can be obedient.

While this may very well be the purpose era, I want to encourage you to guard your purpose.  I have no doubt that God has an amazing plan for your life that will blow your mind, but with great purpose comes great responsibility.  Be consistent in communicating with your Father and being sensitive to His voice.  He will always direct you down the right path and when you miss a step, He will catch you.  Ensure you know who you are, your motives are pure, and that you are sticking to God’s plan.

I’m grateful for you and praying for you.

Until next time…

Be strong, Be Courageous, Serve God Wholeheartedly
